    What stallion behavior is acceptable?

This is a great topic for me to read and learn. I only plan to hand breed, but he is turned out with 2 mares both confirmed in foal (not mine) He will be going out in public this fall, just to friends's farm to learn how to behave away from home. After talking with my vet he will be gelded in...

    What stallion behavior is acceptable?

I dont like his behavior in pasture because he seems stressed. Like he's constantly trying to micromanage everyone's location in regards to his mares. He doesnt seem happy? I shouldnt say that....in his stall whe I tie him (part of training) thats the only 20mins of the day he seems to relax...

    What stallion behavior is acceptable?

Thanks guys. This confirms it for me. My husband is bent out of shape about it because I paid good money for him blah blah blah. But my dream is to show, and I have young kids. If they were able to show my 'new' gelding too that would be so fun for me. I love that this forum is here. And Marty...

    What stallion behavior is acceptable?

What do you tolerate in your boys? My colt is 3. He's VERY well behaved on the lead. He ties respectfully and listens well. 95% of the time. If there are geldings around...look out. He'd rather charge the fence then breed a mare in raging heat. He paws at the gate, rears. He never shares a...

    Showing stallions

Thanks. If you get on your hands and knees then you can see them both just one smaller. If you reach up in there he sucks that little one up that you have to give him a good feel. We will be doing local fairs as the recognized shows are quite far for now

    Showing stallions

What are the rules regarding testicle checking? Id like to show my stud but he's 'lopsided' due to dropping late. Even then he'll suck that little guy uo during moments of stress. He is also very poor about having his man bits touched. Is this behaviour taken into consideration? We'd like to...

    Broodmare has hives!

My gelding had hive issues this spring. My vet once told me a story of a client whose mare was allergic to her bedding. The shavings company changed suppliers and it made a difference.

    Weaning orphans?

Im getting mixed messages from articles, vets, etc. There is not much targeted towards minis which contributes. Filly is almost 2 months old. Shes doing very well with her buddy (shared stall, turnout, etc). She will stay with this buddy until Spring regardless of weaning time...its the best...

How much weight should foals gain/.

Thanks everyone. We had zero success with milk replacer, and she was not a fan of the pellets either. She will only drink goat's milk from the goat I bought for her (non horse people think I've lost my marbles). Once we established milking and bucket feeding, we've now gotten to a point where...

How much weight should foals gain/.

My orphan filly is thriving. She is drinking goat's milk from a bowl 4 times per day, and eating her grain and hay, and of course drinking water. My vet has suggested that we weigh her weekly so we can adjust her milk consumption. They want her to continue on milk until she is 5-6 months old...

    Orphan foal....advice needed please!

We found a dairy goat for her. I milk the goat and baby takes that from the bowl like nobodys business. Shes sucking back a good 500mls every 4hrs. Ill go 7hrs tonight in hopes that baby tries to nurse. That goat saved us. She is guaranteed a spot on my farm for life.
