    So, I heard.....

I have to agree that height is a combination of both genetics and diet. Horses that are well fed as youngsters grow and mature earlier than those that are not. Here, I feed mine a quality diet starting as foals as I want them to reach their height as early as genetically possible.

Disconnected Socks Sign of Pinto Blood?

Yes, your boy is a minimal tobiano pinto. He can very likely sire foals with more white than he has out of solid mares. Pretty boy!

Don't forget your Stallion Reports - postmarked by 1/15/14

Thanks for the reminder! I did mine several weeks ago, but it's easy to forget about them with the hubbub of the holidays!

    HELP PLEASE *Sick Foal*

My guess is joint ill. I had a foal last year that had swelling that went from joint to joint. Oral and injectable antibiotics were ineffective. He also had unusual swellings. Mostly on his head. I had him put down at 3 months of age. Hope this foal has something treatable.

Regarding the possible future DNA testing for Chondrodysplasia-like Dwarfism

In my observation since I purchased my first miniature horses in 1989, serious, committed breeders are breeding out undesired characteristics. I see way fewer miniature horses with dwarf like features now than I did back in the 1990's. So, there is self-limiting going on which is a great...

Redrock Miniature Horse Farm - Dream - maiden appaloosa mare *FOALED* 5/16 *New picture 7/23*

It's a blue eyed, bay pinto filly! Foaled yesterday (7/30) morning. I've been so busy getting ready to leave for the AMHA Central Championship Show (leaving tomorrow morning), that I haven't had time to take pictures, but promise to get some up as soon as I get back. Oh, and I had my vet out...

Thanks, everyone. I think he's pretty special! Mary, I have pintos too. From this year, I have a bay, blue eyed tobiano/splashed white filly by Lucky Four Santa Fe So Impressive and out of Redrock News Flash foaled late March. In June, we had a homozygous black pinto filly with one blue...

    Windswept

I've had a couple of foals over the years that were windswept at birth. I related it to how they were laying in utero. It corrected on it's own and within a few weeks of birth, you would never know there had been any problem.

Is hay sprayed with Nitrogen safe to feed?

I can't answer that specifically, but I do know that ammonium nitrate fertilizer can cause fetal deformities in some instances. If I was going to be feeding that hay to broodmares, I'd want to find out more information.

    AMHA 2013 rule book amendment

Laurie, the sliding stops are being done puposely by Roadster drivers. It looks dangerous to me and must be uncomfortable to the horse! Glad to see that rule change!
