    Vet books?

Captain M. Horace Hayes's "Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners" I bought my first copy with a book token when I was 13 (1973!) My kids bought me an updated copy a few years ago. I've referred to it time and time again. If not to find out problems for myself, then to expand on what the vet had...

    Doing CPR On Your Foal

Terrific information, thank you. I too would like to post on another forum if I may? We try and keep a lot of advice handy for foaling. Kate

    pigment

I've come across this in a couple of horses here in Ireland. The problem here was copper deficiency. The vet prescribed a shot of copper (injection that is) and the problem began to clear up within a couple of weeks. K

    Drawfism in Irish Minis

It has recently been said there is no problem with dwarfism in Irish minis. Sadly this is not true. As an Irish judge of miniature horses, I have seen dwarf characteristics, some severe, in EVERY show i've ever judged in this country. I am aware many of the owners of faulty horses bought them...

should a stallion be bred from if it is UNDER 28 inches?

This explaination indicates a misquote does it not?

should a stallion be bred from if it is UNDER 28 inches?

I have since spoken to both parties involved in this article and both have agreed this is a misquote. A correction will be printed in the same publication, to satisfy all concerned and avoid further confusion. Kate

Showing white (or mostly white) horses.

We clip horses with white bits a little earlier before a show than those without to give the hair time to grow back enough to show white... not pink. And remember... a good horse is never a bad colour! Kate

    FLAKY COAT????

Lynda we see this every so often. It often seems to be associated with mild sweet itch but I also think there's a fungus thing going on too. They now know dandruff in people is associated with fungal infection. We feed our horses Tesco's cheapest vegetable oil and their coats are great. I...

Picture of Bump on my fillys face.

It's still difficult to say what it is from a pic. If you horse doesn't appear sick and is eating normally, it's not urgent. Is it painful? Is it hard or soft? I can't tell if it's actually sticking out or a flatish lump. If there's little pain, it's sticking out and hard, it looks like a...

    Rearing

Temperament is most certainly a factor that's taken into consideration in the show ring. Although it depends on the class eg, riding ponies and ridden hunters it's very important. Minis are horses too and so many people promote them as suitable for children so of course it matters a lot. Kate

    Rearing

Just wanted to say with regard to rearing when tied, I agree with Marty, let him get on with it and only go over to him when he's standing quietly. You may need to tie him a little shorter too. Horses soon tire of dirty tricks once they don't work. K

    Bump/sore by my filly's mouth

Don't panic Palomino, tumour just means lump. I think mini is referring to a wart like growth called a sarcoid. But if it's come on suddenly, it's unlikely to be that. It could be any number of things but not likely to be serious, if it doesn't clear up in a few days, get your vet to check it...

    Rearing

OK... at the risk of being shot down for cruelty, here's what we do. First and foremost we must be sure there are no sharp teeth or fear issues. Rearing is a killer in our discipline (sport horses). My full time rider has already had his shin bone broken and pushed out through both his skin...

    Flaxseed

I've fed flaxseed (linseed) mashes for over 30 years but never raw. As the link on Reble's reply shows, it is toxic! It contains an enzyme called cyanogenic glycoside which produces cyanide on contact with air. Boiling renders this harmless. I've always soaked it over night then boiled for an...
