Can a mini be genetically tested to see if he was once registered with the AMHA? Am I understanding correctly that after a certain year (1996?) all minis had to be tested in order to be registered?

Thanks.

I think the only way they can do that is if you have the horse's name or both parents, so they have something to test against. As far as I know, they can't just feed DNA info into a computer and have a name pop out, it's not that advanced, yet.

Morgans can DNA and identify a previously registered horse and I believe some other breeds can do the same. I doubt AMHA has that capability, just because foals do not get DNA tested at time of registration (unless that is a relatively new requirement?) A horse has to be DNA'd before its offspring can be registeted but a horse not used for breeding probably will not have DNA in file.
