I was asked for help regarding a friends horse. Below is excerpt of her outline of problem and vet action. I told her that somebody on this form has usually had similar issues and can help. I know leg issues can be varied, but any input would be appreciated.

"having some problems, we had noticed in May he was limping on his back right leg. It seemed tender to the touch but not swollen. We kept a look out and the next week the vet was coming for their yearly checkups by then he was walking very stiffly and slowly. Couldn't detect anything wrong with hoofs, farrier comes every 8 weeks so confirmed not founder. Took blood everything came back normal, no lyme etc. Had him on bute, helped him immensely and also vet put him on glucosamine for a 2 week period which helped and he was back to walking normal, now started all over again. Vet is wondering if JayDee's descendants had this happen. "

How old? Sounds like arthritis. Mine is on Adequan, which helps immensely. Xray is the only way to know for sure if it is arthritis.

Also, after mine had been on Adequan for a few months, he got really stiff. He could hardly get in/out of the trailer. I thought the Adquan wasn't working any more. Vet suggested a chiropractor. One treatment, and he jumped in and out of the trailer like a colt. They get their bodies in a tight position because of pain, and once the pain is relieved they are maladjusted.

That's just my own experience with stiffness.

Where in the back leg did the pain seem to be? Where was he tender to touch?

A horse I know of was barely able to move. Vet suspected epm. Blood work and tests. She had the chiro out. Turns out the horse had a bad fall in the pasture. After just one chiro visit he was much better. After 3rd he is nearly recovered.
