My oldest mare is 34 years old and wondered what that equals in human years. I found a calculator on line that suggests she is the equivalent of 100 years in human age. She is in pretty good shape structure wise blessed with good bones and joints, but poor teeth and doesn't shed well naturally so she gets her senior pellets as a mash and clipped. She was my best producer and gave me five champions on my show string and passed her outstanding movement. She was very reliable to easily foal and an excellent mother, she came from the Peaceful Valley farm, Mr. Dalton . She was retired from breeding after eight foals years ago, but she still cycles and drives the boys insane. She will not ever be bred again, but I recall someone on here in the past had a very old mare that had a healthy foal when in her 30's. Anyone remember that?

When my pony was 32 the vet told me his age was equal to that of "a hundred year old man" so I would guess that the calculator would be about right. He looked pretty good, but like your mare, teeth were an issue.

She sounds pretty feisty for an old girl, flirting with those boys! Do you have a picture of her? I love to see her.

I know of a pony who lived to be 42. He was in the same circle of horse people for most of that time so the age was pretty accurate. He was used for beginner lessons right through his late 30's. He was a pony, not a mini but I thought his age was worth mentioning as it was an accomplishment.

In all the traveling my husband did, he stumbled on a Hackney pony in Arkansas who was 54. The mare was registered, so it was proven. And a mini breeder in Washington had a mare who was in her 40's........Both situations are rare, IMO. The oldest we've had was 30 and she passed last year.

I remember Jean posting once about a mare in her late 30's or early 40's who had a filly after many years of being open...that's all I remember maybe she'll drop in and tell it again.

Fun to read about other aged horses, I bet there are a lot of other minis that are in their 30's on the forum. I had many years of enjoying the foals and I miss that, but my life is too complicated now and retired from breeding 10 years ago. My old mare is a line back yellow dun carrying the silver gene that she passed on to several foals...The horse in my avatar, Max (Excalibur), is her first foal. Second foal is Amazing Grace, pictured below as a foal, I lost her last year to a stroke, still feeling the loss deeply, she was the best. She haltered, drove, and broke to ride by 4 year old granddaughter and gave me 2 foals.IMG_20160309_0001.jpg

Losing our oldsters who we've had for years is a tough one.....They've become family. We are slowing down with the breeding, so most of our herd is getting older.....We have several who are well into their 20's. Some "professional" breeders sell off their horses when they reach a certain age, but we just can't do that. Our girls gave us so much of themselves.......They deserve a safe, peaceful retirement.

We still have the very first mini we bought. She was 8 months old, born in 1990 and definitely my "heart horse"......If she had her way she'd still be a mom, but I've made her retire. Instead, she's in our "foal pasture" by the barn and being a Nanny to the babies. They seem to recognize her instinct and gravitate to her. Every day I see one of them grooming on her and she's grooming on them.

My aging is , 1 yr old is 11 yrs( human), 2 yr old (16), 3 yr old (21) and thereafter 2 human yrs per one horse year. Hence, my 33 yr old horse would be 81 yrs in human years.
