How do I ask for a lead when cantering when driving?

I would practice first with your horse on a lunge line. Use a word signal to ask for the canter. Make sure they are willing to take both leads. Some horses aren't balanced enough to take both leads. If your horse only wants to canter on one lead you'll have to work him/her in the other direction until his/her balance improves enough so he/she can canter on both leads.

Once they canter on command on the correct lead then you can introduce cantering in the cart. Start heading away from the barn in a controlled space like a ring. Just allow them to take the lead they want at first until they're comfortable cantering in the cart. Then ask for the canter on a circle with your word signal and a slight inside half halt. They should pick up the correct lead because of the circle. Practice that both ways until your horse is getting the correct lead and cantering on command. Then start with a slight inside turn with the same commands. Your horse should be able to pick up the lead you choose at this point. Hope this helps!
