What cues do you use to bend a horse while driving? We are talking forward motion while bending the head and neck?

bending a driving horse is done with the whip and reins. if you are turning left you use the reins (ofcourse) , and tap lightly between the back of the ribs and flank on the opposite side if im not mistaken.

My mini bends with the oppisite cue, if I am turning left, I tap his left side and he bends. I don't know if this is wrong, right or what! I discovered it by accident, but he definetely "knows" that cue and was trained to respond that way, so that's the way we go. We could be all wrong, but it works for him.

Thank you for looking that up. I did not know if I was right or not, I was just going by Peanut's response. He has been teaching me the ropes and has been great to learn with. He wants it done a certain way, and when you figure it out he gives 100%. Thanks for posting what you discovered, I will tell Peanut he's right :)

So what about bending the head and neck but continuing forward movement? I have seen horse taught to do it, have never figured out how to stop them from turning.

This type of flexing is a juggling act with voice, reins and whip. It is something easier to teach while ground driving, then added while in the cart. Good OLD dressage riding books cover half pass and shoulders in better then the new books. What you are asking is basic dressage type movements.

I can go in depth later today, I'm off to work right now.

If you have a good classical dressage training, just ask for it he way you would under saddle without your leg!

When I was learning to drive I'd even shift my seat and mive my legs a little just to make sure I was doing it right.

Worked for me!
