Hi all I'm new to owning a mini so you'll have to forgive me for asking what I imagine to be common knowledge:

I just recently purchased a 2 year old mini mare with temporary amha papers and the application for amhr. My question is, when she turns 3 and I submit her amha papers for permanent status, is there somewhere I must take her to be formally measured?

She currently stands at 34" but my worry is that even if she does not grow any further that I might eventually take her to an amha show and they could measure her too tall depending on who measures.Has anyone ever had an issue with measuring on a show day for a mini that stands 34"?

Be sure you get her AMHR application turned in and get those AMHR papers for her.

When you are measuring, are you measuring at the LAST hairs of the mane? Does she have recently trimmed feet? Or does she have a lot of heel (which makes a horse taller)? Those all impact a measurement. Also, on any given day, I can measure a horse multiple times at the same location (very level hard surface) and get slightly different measurements, depending on how excited the horse is, whether it is stretched slightly, etc.

At an AMHA show, a horse cannot measure over 33" as a 2 year old. That does not mean the papers are taken away!! If she measures over the allowed height, and you know you cannot get her any smaller, just pull out from the show. Chances are she could stay 34" or under as a mature mare. But this is where your AMHR papers become very valuable because your mare can go up to 38" and be "legal".

Thank you for the advice! I plan to submit her papers asap.

If I showed her it wouldn't be until she was 3 anyway and I know shes too tall to show in the Amha 2 year olds. But if she stays 34" does anyone ever have an issue at a show if they are measured in?

Also currently the line on her papers asking for her height is blank, her previous owner never filled it in. Can I enter that info myself or does she have to be officially measured by amha?

You must wait until her actual 3rd birthday to send them in. At that point, you measure her and fill in her actual height on the certificate before mailing it in. If at that time she is over 34", she would be put into the "B" height division of the AMHR and the AMHA would not issue permanent papers.

Just don't forget to send in your transfer paperwork soon, as the rates go up if you wait too long.

Sorry, I missed the part in your post where you said she only has application for AMHR. You can send it in now to get her temporary certificate and on her 3rd birthday, measure her and update her. I looked at the fee schedule for AMHR; to register her now at 2yrs old is $45 and the transfer within 6 months is $15. To update her will be $5. If you wait to register her until she is 3 and transfer her then it would be $25 for the transfer (fee may increase before then) and $60 to register her. So while she isn't eligible for permanent status yet, it is cheaper for you to mail in her AMHR paperwork now.
