Hi,

I purchased two weanling colts last fall who are doing wonderfully. Right now they are in board 2x3 fencing 4 foot high. This summer I had planned on turning them out on a pasture my goats "made". I use premier electric mesh fencing for my goats. I was wondering whats your opinion on turning out minis in electric mesh? I know its not tall enough its only 36" high as we have nigerian dwarfs but I was thinking I'd put another strand on top with some taller poles? They are both yearling colts now, one of them did get loose earlier this spring and when he ran near that fence he didn't run through it or jump over it. Just curious on all your opinions.

Thanks!

Donna

They will be gelded eventually , still not sure when the best time to do that is. Right now they both are doing very well with manners with me. They sure play like wild stallions though...I love them!

I have my mares on turnout of 30 acres of 2 strand wire mesh electric. Love the Premier fencing! But I have to say I have plans to permanent fence my pastures as I personally like permanent fencing better. Where I live, we are not near a road or neighbors so I'm okay with electric fencing at the moment but can't wait to replace it. I know most people will probably disagree with me.

This is electric mesh fencing 4x4 squares with 5 strands of electric wire. I love Premier too, We live in the woods, neighbors 1/2 mile away in all directions no other horses. Around for days...Just our goats. I was planning on turning the horses out with the goats as long as the goats don't chew on their tails! We have 11 acres but its mostly woods. The goats have been here for three years though and have made one acre of really nice pasture now. They are working on another one now...

The challenge with strands for me is I have one A size and one B size I'd need a higher strand for the B and a lower strand for the A and a few in between so might as well have the mesh that I already have! Of course when I'm not at home they would be in their wood paddock.

I think you'll do just fine with that set up and your minis will have a great time.

That fencing is nice, I've used it as temporary fencing INSIDE my other fence for the acorn season, however its not real fencing as far as I'm concerned.

As far as putting your horses out with goats, NEVER.

CMHR recently rescued a horse had to put a horse to sleep who was significantly gored by goats and could not be saved. Do not do this. .

The fencing works great for the goats, and none of my goats have horns they are all disbudded. But thanks for that, its not a for sure thing that we'll put them all together anyhow we have plenty of grazing room for all of them even if we keep them seperated.

That I don't want...I remember a customer of mine ( back when I owned a tack shop) told me her sheep chewed her horses tail off so I was kind of worried about that. I have 10 wethers and one buck ( who I am selling actually) So I am working on keeping them separate . The goats prefer browse in the woods anyhow and the pasture is now all grass thanks to them. So it makes sense to keep them separate. Just letting them in to clean up what the horses won't eat! I guess my biggest concern was the mesh fencing I got a new fencer for it with a bit more juice and will be more vigilant with being sure its working well.
